Syrians have the right to know the reality in Syria before being asked to go back

On World Refugee Day, we take the opportunity to raise global awareness of the hurdle facing Syrian refugees who are not sufficiently informed about the dangers facing them in Syria should they be forced to return in the current reality. We call on the UNHCR to fulfill its responsibility to inform Syrian refugees and IDPs of the reality in Syria and prevent the unsafe and premature return of displaced Syrians to an unsafe Syria.

Online panel discussion: Syrians have the right to know the reality in Syria before returning

On World Refugee Day, the Syrian Association for Citizens’ Dignity (SACD) and Voices of Displaced Syrians Forum organized an online panel discussion to raise global awareness of the problem facing Syrian refugees who are not sufficiently informed about the dangers facing them in Syria should they be forced to return in the current reality.

The panel aimed to raise awareness of the UNHCR’s failure to properly inform Syrian refugees of the reality facing them in Syria, as per its responsibility, contribute to better awareness of Syrian refugees of the reality facing them in Syria, especially in the context of the drive to normalize the regime, and discuss recommendations targeting UNHCR.

SACD lodges protest to UK government over possible deportations of Syrian refugees to Rwanda

Regime’s amnesty is another ruse, Syrian detainees need urgent and comprehensive release

The pardon decrees issued, despite the relief they bring to a very limited number of families, are merely a tactical move the regime uses when it feels threatened. This time it was after the Tadamon massacre that has shown the world the regime's real face.

"The timing and circumstances of issuing this amnesty law clearly indicate that it's politically motivated. The Syrian regime wants to give an impression that it's taking steps to create conditions to encourage normalization," writes Mohamad Al Jouja, member of SACD.

Assassinations in Eastern Ghouta: “I lost my sons to regime’s false promises and settlement agreements. I wish we fled.”

"My sons signed reconciliation agreements in Eastern Ghouta. One was forcibly recruited to the army, one died under torture and the third one is forcibly disappeared."

To get a complete picture of the living reality in the reconciliation areas, we spoke with Umm Khaled, who decided to remain in her hometown. She is one of many Syrians who believed Assad and Russia's false promises of safety and security.

What needs to happen before voluntary, safe and dignified return to Syria is possible?

Despite the desperate search of some policy makers and international mediators for a quick solution or flirtations with appeasement of the Syrian regime and its Russian and Iranian sponsors, a comprehensive and sustainable political solution that meets the aspirations of the Syrians is still the only way to end the conflict in Syria, restore stability to the entire region and stop the spill over of the consequences of the conflict to neighboring countries and Europe.
